In an effort to be in sync with the Battleground District our Pack rules will align with theirs. So, PLEASE review ALL rules carefully BEFORE beginning work on your cars.

We will be sending the fastest car from each RANK (NOT from each DEN) to the District finals to be held on April 16th.

All cars MUST pass inspection to qualify for the race.

.
The inspection points are as follows:

a. The car must have been made during the current year (year in which the derby is held).
b. The car must be made of materials from the official Boy Scout Kit (Grand Prix Car Kit #17006). Substitutions for the body, wheels and round head nails furnished with the kit are strictly prohibited. Nails may be polished. Other items may be added for weight or design purposes.
c. The width of the car shall not exceed 2.75 inches.
d. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
e. The height of the car shall not exceed 2.75 inches.
f.  The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.  The readings of the official Pack 188 race scale shall be final.
g. All cars must have 3/8" minimum clearance under the body, 1¾" minimum clearance between the inside of the wheels
h. Axles, wheels and body wood shall be provided in the kit.  Wheels cannot be shaved or reduced in diameter or width. Sandpaper may be used to remove burrs created in the manufacturing process. The original wheelbase must be maintained using the pre-cut slots in the provided wood block.
i. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
j. Only dry powdered lubricants may be used and must be applied prior to weigh in. No lubrication will be permitted after inspection. No lubrication is permitted on the exposed surface of the wheels. Cars that have had wet lubricants applied will not be permitted to run.
k. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
l.  All four (4) wheels Must lay flat on the track surface at the same time.
m. Any features added must be within length, width, bottom clearance and weight limits.
n. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
o. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in or on the car (liquids are considered loose materials). Use of tape to hold weight on the car is prohibited.
p. After inspection cars are retained by racing officials only. Cars will be returned after all races are complete and final.
q. The front of all cars can be no more than 1" high at the center front of the car.  No part of the car can hang over the center front of the car.

Race Day Rules:
a. Only race day judges will be allowed inside the racing circle. All spectators must remain outside the racing circle.
b. Cars will be handled by racing officials only.
c. Any and all race day adjustments must be made with the permission of a Race Day Judge.
d. Any non-conforming modifications or additional lubricating will result in the immediate disqualification of the car.
e. All cars will be on display inside the barrier.

Scoring Procedures:

      a. The computer will determine the heat schedule.

      b.  A "clean" race is one in which all cars start evenly and each car stays on the track for the length of the track and does not impede the operation of another car.

      c.  If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axel or other problem as determined by the race judge, the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant will be disqualified. If on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will run a third time but without the disqualified car.

      d.  If a car suffers from a mechanical problem after a pass, the participant may ask the race official for time to make a repair. The participant will have up to five (5) minutes to repair the car. No additional lubricant may be added during the repair process. The previous pass will not be re-run unless the race official rules that interference occurred with another car.

      e. Each heat will consist of the races required, so each car races once in each lane.

      f. The electronic timer on the track will select the order of finish.

      g.  Medals will be given to the first, second and third place winners from each den.

      h.  The first place winner from each den will compete at the end of the night for Pack Level 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies.

i.  In addition, two special awards will be presented per den: the "Most Original" car as judged by the adult Pack leaders, the "Coolest Car" or Scout’s choice as voted on by the Pack’s scouts

In the interest of fairness to all participants, any parent, or scout who ignores or disobeys the Pack Pinewood Derby rules set forth above or disobeys appropriate Scouting behavior will result in disqualification.

Please remember that the purpose of the Pinewood Derby is to have each Scout enjoy the process of designing and making his car with the help and assistance of his parent/guardian. In a society where your son is often taught that "winning is everything", Cub Scouting is teaching him to "Do HIS Best"
